The Academy of American Poets

The Academy of American Poets is our nation’s leading champion of poets, poetry, and the work of poetry organizations. The organization produces Poets.org, the world’s largest publicly-funded website for poets and poetry; National Poetry Month; the popular Poem-a-Day series; American Poets magazine; Teach This Poem and other resources for K-12 educators; an annual series of poetry readings and special events; and awards the American Poets Prizes. The organization also coordinates the work of a national Poetry Coalition working to promote the value poets bring to our culture and the important contribution poetry makes in the lives of people of all ages and backgrounds. To read the full press release explaining the Academy of American Poets Laureate Fellowship, which was made possible by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, please go here.

The Thornhill Lopez Center on 4th (TLC4) (aka Eon) is a SAAF place for LGBTQ+ and allied youth ages 13-24 to visit in order to access a variety of services to support their health and well-being. According to the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), less than 50% of LGBTQ+ youth say they have an adult in their family they could turn to for help. The top three most important problems for LGBTQ+ youth in their lives right now include non-accepting families, bullying and problems at school, and fear of being out. TLC4 provides critical services and support for youth that need support. We will hold several workshops at TLC4/Eon and a showcase/poetry slam on Saturday, Dec 7 from 5-8pm.

We will be ordering books from Antigone Bookstore and we’ll hold two workshops there, free and open to the public. Workshops will be held on Sunday, Sept. 29 from 2-4 and again on Sunday, Oct. 27 from 2-4. We hope to see you there!

Trans, Non-binary, and Queer+ poetry books have also been generously donated by the following presses: YesYes Books, Sibling Rivalry Press, Nightboat Books, Milkweed Editions, Kelsey St Press, Tolsun books, Alice James Books, Wave Poetry, BOA Editions, Civil Coping Mechanisms/The Accomplices, Autumn House Press, Copper Canyon, Birds LLC, Noemi Press, Four Way Books, and Sundress Publications. Please support these presses!

Workshops are currently being scheduled with Camp Born This Way, City High GSA, Palo Verde Poetry Club, UA Poetry Center, Southern Arizona Gender Alliance (SAGA), Senior Pride, and Pima County Public Library. Check the Events page for updates and if your GSA and/or group would like to host a workshop, please do get in touch!
